World Food Programme Data Pipelines

Food Security

Natural hazards and conflict are some of the primary drivers of the requirements in humanitarian assistance that WFP has to fulfill. Fast and accurate information on the extent and severity of the impact of natural hazards is a fundamental input to WFP response planning. Early warning of drought conditions, its extent and magnitude has become an essential analytical requirement for WFP. More recently, the analysis of land cover changes has received increasing attention given the information it can provide for a range of WP activities - these are mainly concerned with detection of conflict impacts on cropland extent and infra-structure and with the analysis and verification of the long term outcomes of WFP interventions on resilience enhancing community asset building. Earth Observation data can provide invaluable information to satisfy these requirements, provided the data can be accessed in a timely way and relevant user tailored information efficiently extracted.

The proposed challenges address the provision of EO data tailored to the analysis of natural hazards and to the analysis of changes in land cover relevant to humanitarian response and planning.
